DARH RESEARCH · GLOBAL MARKETS · RESEARCH PRIMER
A single explanation rarely captures every force affecting gold. The World Gold Council groups the drivers into economic expansion, risk and uncertainty, opportunity cost, and momentum.
Four questions to investigate
- Demand: What is happening to consumer and investment demand?
- Risk: Are investors changing how they assess economic or geopolitical uncertainty?
- Opportunity cost: How are bond yields and the U.S. dollar changing the comparison with other assets?
- Momentum: Are flows and positioning reinforcing or reversing a move?
Keep the inference separate
These forces can move in different directions. A rate change alone is not a complete forecast. For each proposed explanation, record the evidence, the observation period and a plausible alternative explanation.
DARH’s proposed research worksheet is simple: one row per driver, one source per observation, and a separate column for interpretation. An empty evidence cell is a reason to qualify a conclusion.
