DARH RESEARCH · DIGITAL ASSETS · RESEARCH PRIMER
Buying an exchange-traded product and holding bitcoin directly are different ways to obtain exposure. The difference deserves research beyond a product’s name.
Understand the exposure
A spot product holds the underlying crypto asset. A futures product obtains exposure through contracts. An exchange listing does not remove the volatility of bitcoin or ether.
Read the product documents
The SEC’s investor bulletin explains that product shares can deviate from the underlying asset’s price. Sponsor fees and the product’s structure also affect the exposure an investor receives. Its discussion of spot commodity trusts should not be assumed to describe every product that uses “ETF” in its name.
A DARH comparison checklist
- Identify the exact product and the current prospectus.
- Check whether exposure is spot, futures-based or another structure.
- Record fees, tracking risks and custody arrangements.
- Separate the asset thesis from the choice of vehicle.
This framework does not rank products or recommend a purchase. Eligibility and the applicable product documents must be checked separately.
